The Diverse Guy: Why Flying Beats Stillness

That friend of mine divides his money between footwear, mutual funds, and cryptocurrencies. The person who dabbles in salsa courses possesses a drone, used archery once. We may call him “diversify guy” Everybody in their circle has someone like that, spreading risk in search of that fleeting pleasure.

Most people find solace in daily habit. The same cereal. Same path of travel to work. The diversify man? He tastes every cereal available in the store, even off-brand products with cartoon dragons. He says it’s taste research; you would assume he simply enjoys rolling the odds. And occasionally that dice roll falls on adventure.

Has anyone ever played Monopoly with a buyer of every property? That’s the bright, crazy, always smiling diversified guy in his element. He committed money to a beehive last week. He will speak about cultivating bonsai next week. One foot in, one out, trying the concrete and the water. He is juggling three stories at once at the family barbecue: the sourdough catastrophe, his effort at screen printing, and why dogecoin makes for terrific dinner conversation.

Still, his colorful craziness has a technique. He moves from project to project for a legitimate purpose. He won’t be caught off guard by one significant setback by sweeping broadly. Maybe his Etsy shop picks up slack if his fantasy football squad fails. Should he find himself bored, tomorrow offers a new pastime or slope. Nothing stands still for very long.

Sometimes spreading passions like peanut butter makes folks raise an eyebrow. “Don’t you ever stick with something? They’ll tease.” Yes, but why would one glue both shoes to the same floorboard? There are no handcuffs on curiosity. The diversified person sees opportunities all around. All at once, it’s both exciting and draining.

Sunday evenings he is learning Portuguese by downloading an app. By Wednesday, he is teaching himself origami and the app has been forgotten. Is this anarchy? Another agility? Perhaps a combination, like pineapple on pizza—odd but it works for him. In the same breath he can spout memes and paraphrase old proverbs. He carries five different bats since life likes to toss curveballs.

This goes beyond simply compiling hobbies or investments like to shiny stones. Balancing ambition with backup plans has a certain artistic quality. Consider the gardener laying rows of foreign seeds. The best thing is the surprises; some blossom, some flop. While others pause, the diversified guy finds humor in mistakes and wisdom in variety.

Trying new things won’t always result in a gold star. Still, it might let a few lucky clovers fall from your pocket. When everything feels wobbly the next time, search for the friend juggling six oddballs concurrently. Perhaps you will borrow a trick or two—or at least taste a bowl of the off-brand dragon cereal.
